A man was injured when his catamaran collided with a whale in Durban on Saturday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

"One adult male onboard [was] reported to be seriously injured after allegedly being thrown forward on deck colliding with deck structures sustaining suspected fractures to his right arm," spokesman Craig Lambinon said.

The man, who was alone on the vessel, was taken to hospital.

It was not known what had happened to the whale.
