Thirteen people have been arrested for the murder of a man accused of taking part in the killing of two elderly people in Zebediela, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

They were arrested on Tuesday.

The group allegedly took 28-year-old Tebogo Mello to the veld on Monday and hanged him from a tree, Lt-Col Ronel Otto said.

Mello was one of the four men released after being arrested in connection with the murder of two pensioners in the area.

Police could not link them to the crime, which was committed in July, Otto said.

Maggie Raesibe Mphahlele, 76, and Simon Malope, 72, were found killed in their homes on different days. Both had been strangled.

Their attackers took undisclosed amount of cash, cellphones and other household items.

Otto said the 13 people arrested, including four women, would appear soon in the Mokopane Magistrate's Court on a charge of murder.
