Two men were fined R20,000 each for speeding in KwaZulu-Natal at the weekend, transport MEC Willies Mchunu said on Monday.

"This will send a clear message to all transgressors on the road that we are serious about ensuring maximum law enforcement," he said in a statement.

Mchunu said this meant the traffic officials were doing their job, and he commended the Scottburgh Magistrate's Court's "good work".

Mchunu's spokesman Kwanele Ncalane said Kareel Dukhi, 29, who was driving a Mitsubishi, was sentenced to a R20,000 fine or eight years in prison on Sunday after being caught doing 205km/h in a 120km/h zone in Ellingham, near Park Rynie.

Mohamed Mogalia, 41, was caught driving 202km/h on the same road on Sunday and given the option of a R20,000 fine or eight years' imprisonment on Monday.

On Saturday, another motorist was caught doing 182km/h and given the option of a R8000 fine or four years' imprisonment.

Also on Saturday, a driver was caught doing 194km/h on the N2 and given the option of a R14,000 fine or four years in jail. Their names were not immediately available.

Mchunu said the fines would help encourage motorists to obey the law.

"We are optimistic that our approach to road offenders will reduce the scourge of road accidents. It is unacceptable that people are driving at 202km/h and 205km/h," he said.
