A motorcyclist accused of driving at 242km/h on the N1 south, near the Maraisburg on-ramp was arrested, Johannesburg metro police said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the 33-year-old from Lenasia was travelling on a white Honda motorcycle at more than twice the legal speed.

"His motorcycle did not have a number plate so he thought he would be able to dodge the speed cameras," Minnaar said. "Little did he know that our high speed unit was operating on the southern side of the freeway, instead of the usual northbound side."

The man was released on R1,500 bail and was expected to appear in the Roodepoort Magistrate's Court on Monday for speeding and driving without a number plate.

Minnaar said 13 other motorists were arrested during Sunday's operation for travelling at speeds above the 160km/h mark.

They would also appear in the Roodepoort court on Monday.
