A Durban policeman accused of murder was granted bail of R2000 by the Verulam Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, said the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid).
"Ipid investigators attended the scene and conducted an investigation after which they arrested the suspect, who is stationed at Isipingo Vispol," spokesman Moses Dlamini said.
The 40-year-old warrant officer allegedly shot dead 20-year-old Romano Dean Govender with his service pistol at a social function at Hillgrove Secondary School, in Newlands West, on Saturday.
He was off-duty at the time, but was asked to intervene in an altercation between one of Govender's friends and another man. He allegedly fired a number of shots into the air before fatally wounding Govender, said Dlamini.
The case was postponed until November 30.
