A Pampierstad mother was sent to jail for 12 years on Tuesday for killing five of her children.

North West High Court Judge Ronald Hendricks sentenced Venolia Siwa, 35, to 12 years' imprisonment on each of the murders, which would run concurrently.

Siwa pleaded guilty to the murders in September this year in her trial in the Vryburg Circuit Court.

She murdered her children in Pampierstad, on the border between the Northern Cape and North West, in 2011.

In a statement, Siwa confessed to killing four of her children by stabbing them in the neck with a kitchen knife.

She drowned the fifth in a bath.

A spokeswoman for Legal Aid in North West, Thotoane Shale, confirmed the sentence.
