Metro police in Johannesburg on Thursday warned motorists they faced stiff penalties if found driving with tampered number plates.

"If motorists tamper with number plates, or spray them in such a way that they are not visible, then the driver can be arrested for number plate fraud," spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

Motorists would be fined R500 for each missing plate, and would be arrested if a vehicle was without both. Obscured number plates would incur a R250 fine.
