Mandela treatment continuing at home: presidency

Former President Nelson Mandela continues to receive medical care as he rests at his home in Houghton, the presidency said.

Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said while he had not received an update from doctors by late Thursday morning, "I assume everything is going well".

Maharaj said he did not have specific details on the medical regime Mandela, aged 94, is undergoing since he was discharged from hospital on Wednesday evening.

"The doctors told me they are taking him home, where they are giving him home-based high care."

Mandela spent 18 days in a Pretoria hospital after being flown from his Eastern Cape home at Qunu on December 8.

He was diagnosed with a lung infection and also underwent gallstone surgery.

His stay in hospital was his longest since he was freed over two decades ago.

Mandela has a history of lung problems, having suffered from tuberculosis towards the end of his 27-years spent in prison.

President Jacob Zuma paid Mandela a visit on Christmas day, saying at the time that he was "looking much better" and was in high spirits.

On Thursday, a media contingent set up camp opposite Mandela's home in Houghton.
