The two police officers wounded in a shoot-out on the M2 highway in Johannesburg were still in hospital, Gauteng police said on Wednesday.

Constables Anthony Magalebata, 37, and Lufhuno Maremba, 30, were both hit in the upper body when they tried to pull over a Mercedes Benz while patrolling the highway on Tuesday. The four occupants opened fire on them with assault rifles.

"Constable Maremba is still in a critical condition and the other member is stable," spokesman Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini said.

Police were still searching for the four.
