A three-year-old child was crushed to death when a municipal grader ploughed into a Pietermaritzburg home on Tuesday.

The construction vehicle was traveling along Snathing Main Road in Edendale, when it rolled down an embankment and crashed into a house, killing the toddler and injuring two adults.

ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said when paramedics and the police’s search and rescue team arrived on scene, they were informed by the community that two people were rushed to hospital by members of the public.

"They then proceeded to show the emergency services where a three-year-old toddler was lying underneath the rubble. Paramedics assessed the toddler and the child was unfortunately declared deceased due to the injuries sustained [in] the incident," he said.
