Seventy-five children at a primary school in Bapsfontein on the East Rand were stung by bees on Friday, said Ekhuruleni emergency services.

A Caterpillar machine was working outside Saffola Primary School when it interfered with a beehive, spokesman William Ntladi said.

The children were still in class at the time when the bees came through the windows and stung them.

"They all ran out of the classes, it was chaos. Everyone was running for their lives," said Ntladi.

Thirteen pupils had serious allergic reactions to the stings. They were taken to Tembisa Hospital.

Twenty children had minor allergic reactions and were taken to the Kempton Park Municipal Clinic.

The remaining 42 children were treated at the school by a mobile clinic which was called out, said Ntladi.
