A Johannesburg lawyer was allegedly drunk when he ploughed his car into twelve pedestrians near Sun City in the North West, killing five and seriously injuring another seven.

The lawyer, 35, appeared in the Mogwase Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and has been released on bail of R10 000 according to the Beeld.

Police have not yet released the name of the suspect.

North West police spokesman Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the accident happened in Ledig, an informal settlement about 5km from the Sun City hotel and casino complex, on the R556 access route on Monday.

According to reports, the lawyer was in his BMW X6 when he hit 12 pedestrians who are thought to have been walking home from a nearby shebeen.

The victims who were not killed on impact were all seriously injured, and were taken to the nearby Moses Kotane hospital, Ngubane said.

The lawyer, who was arrested at the scene and taken into custody, was allegedly drunk, alone in the vehicle and speeding.

The victims who died at the scene were Paulos Lefekane, 23, Tumelo Lekoba, 20, Thabo Dipoe, 25, Joyce Yende and Solomon Mokgosi.

The lawyer was charged with driving under the influence and culpable homicide, Ngubane said.
