East Rand couple in court over adoption scam
An East Rand couple appeared in the Edenvale Magistrate's Court after allegedly master-minding an adoption scam, according to a report on Tuesday.
Jennie-Lee Greyling, 27, and her boyfriend, JP Beyleveld, 27, were released on bail of R1 500 each after they appeared in court on Monday on charges including theft, said Beeld.
Greyling allegedly cheated a childless couple out of thousands of rands and conned them into thinking she could help them adopt twin boys.
The couple, Hennie and Adel van Blerk, found out on Thursday that they had been scammed, and that the twins did not exist.
Police said they were also looking for another man, Shauwn van der Mescht, to help them with their investigation.
He was one of Greyling's colleagues at a charitable organisation in Edenvale.
Child care centre Compass distanced itself the couple.
Pastor Jude Martin said any claims involving the charity in the scam were "completely fraudulent".
Martin confirmed Van der Mescht also worked for Compass on a contract. He said the charity organisation had nothing to do with adoption processes. He described the scam as "inhumane".
"I feel so sorry for them [the couple that was scammed]."
The case was postponed to November 7.
