A search is underway for a woman from Kilbachan in KwaZulu-Natal who is allegedly linked to the kidnapping of a 13-day-old baby boy, police said on Friday.

The baby, Siyamthanda, was last seen with Nothando Nxumalo, 25, at a Newcastle taxi rank on December 30 around 11am, Captain Thulani Zwane said.

The baby's mother, Zanele Nkosi, had previously met Nxumalo in Gauteng and had a conversation with her at the taxi rank, Zwane said.

Nxumalo allegedly asked the baby's mother to buy some chips for her from a nearby shop. Nkosi asked Nxumalo to watch the baby while she went to the shop.

"When the mother returned, Nothando [Nxumalo] was nowhere to be found," Zwane said.

"She gave her the baby because she trusted her."

A case of kidnapping has been opened.

Siyamthanda was covered in a blue and white blanket which had his name written on it. Nxumalo was last seen wearing a khaki dress and had a curly weave.
