The body of a man who went missing while diving at Smitswinkel Bay, in the Western Cape, was found on Sunday, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

"The body was located and recovered in the wreck of the Rock Eater," spokesman Craig Lambinon said in a statement.

It was found during a search co-ordinated by police divers.

The 56-year-old Cape Town man's body was handed to forensic pathology services. He went missing on Saturday while on a 34 metre recreational dive with friends. He was suspected to have remained at the wreck of the MV Rock Eater, a fishing vessel, after being separated from the other divers he was with.

Police opened an inquest docket, said Lambinon.
