A road running dream ended badly for JongiKhaya Gwe when he was allegedly racially attacked by neighbourhood watch policemen, and two security guards from Brackenfell, Cape Town.

Gwe, who is an attorney, missed the marathon due to suffering from an injured head, after he was allegedly assaulted with a wooden baton by a Brackenfell neighbourhood watch in Cape Town.

The mêlée took place when Gwe decided to go for a morning walk ahead of the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon.

He said he was stopped by Brakenfell Neighbourhood Watch volunteer Pieter Le Roux, who asked Gwe for identification, as well as what he was doing in the neighbourhood.

Gwe alleges that Le Roux then said that he could only walk in that area if he had permission from him to do so.

Gwe refused to give the neighbourhood watch his ID after they thought he looked suspicious and said he was staying with his sister who lives in Brackenfell.

“After I refused to give Pieter Le Roux my ID, he called me a ‘hardegat’ before proceeding to assault me” he said.

Gwe laid a charge of assault with the intention to cause bodily harm. The accused appeared at magistrate court yesterday.

Le Roux could not comment at the, saying he was in a meeting.

Community Forum Policing Chairman for Brackenfell, Jan Brynard said he could not comment yet because he did not have the full details of the incident.

“I will be having a meeting about the assault today, and will only be able to comment tonight or tomorrow morning” he said.
