An armed robber was shot dead and two others were wounded in a shoot-out with police in Sandton, Johannesburg, on Tuesday, police said.

"At about 1pm today a police officer spotted a vehicle suspected to have been involved in an armed robbery in Rivonia and Kelvin Drive," said Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.

When the police officer tried to stop the vehicle it sped off and collided with several vehicles until the driver lost control.

Dlamini said one of the men fired shots at the police while three others jumped out and ran away.

"A shoot-out ensued and one suspect was fatally wounded, two others shot and wounded, and one arrested without any injury."

Dlamini said a police officer was also wounded during the shoot-out.

"An inquest docket has been opened for the suspect who was fatally wounded."

The three men would be charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, and suspected stolen property.

The men could be linked to an armed robbery where an Avis employee was robbed on Tuesday morning of jewellery, three cellphones and cash.

Police confiscated three guns and one cellphone.
