In an open letter to contractors, The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) Skhumbuzo Macozoma issued a stern warning to shoddy contractors.

He said that they may be blacklisted from doing business with the City if they didn’t act ethically and ensure good quality service delivery.

Macozoma said the JRA has observed that the quality of road infrastructure provided by suppliers deteriorated significantly in recent years.

The City is currently spending R23 million on repairing road infrastructure damaged due to floods last month, and R37million repairing bridges, some of which has been attributed to the poor construction practices.

“It is important in this turn around strategy for management to focus on restoring ethical conduct within the procurement environment, ensuring good quality service delivery to the citizens of Johannesburg and improving productivity levels both internally and with external partners”

“The days of defrauding Government are over… We call on all ethical suppliers who are committed to delivering high quality services to come forward and partner with us” he said

He said the JRA will work closely with the COJ, The Auditor General, the National Treasury, the Construction Industry Board and all other relevant associations that represent the interests of various service providers to ensure that this decision is implemented.

Macozoma also said the JRA would soon be launching an SMME desk to provide the much needed support for emerging contractors and small suppliers in the areas of technical operations and business management.
