Two top doctors at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital have not been deregistered by the Health Professions Council of SA (HPCSA), the Gauteng health department said on Friday.
"The doctors have renewed their registration and the HPCSA have not communicated with the department otherwise," spokesman Simon Zwane said.
"For now we know their registration is up to date and that will remain the case until we received official communication from the HPCSA."
Zwane was responding to a claim by the Democratic Alliance that clinical director Mamorena Mofokeng and clinical executive Sibusiso Ngobese had failed to comply with continuing professional development (CPD) regulations.
The CPD requires doctors to complete 30 hours of continuing education every year, the party's Gauteng health spokesman Jack Bloom said in a statement.
"Mofokeng was suspended by the HPCSA in March this year, and Ngobese in April," said Bloom.
"These doctors are now legally barred from treating patients, which seriously affects their work at the hospital. I am shocked that senior doctors could allow their registration to lapse."
