Dewani killer taxi back in business

The Cape Town taxi in which honeymoon bride Anni Dewani was killed in 2010 is now operating again.

Now owned by a preacher, the taxi was being used to carry factory workers and was sometimes used for missionary errands, the Sunday Independent reported on Sunday.

The previous driver of the VW Sharan, Zola Tongo, was convicted of murder and is serving an 18-year jail term for his role in the Dewani murder.

The taxi had been off the radar after police handed it back to its owner, the girlfriend of Tongo. Unbeknown to the new driver and new owner, the taxi was spotted by the publication on the same routes used on the fateful November 2010 night.

Anni's husband, British businessman Shrien Dewani, will stand trial for conspiracy to commit kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances, murder, kidnapping, and defeating the ends of justice.

It is the State's case that he acted in common purpose and conspired with Cape Town residents Tongo, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, and Xolile Mngeni to kill his wife.

Qwabe and Mngeni are also serving jail terms in connection with the murder.

Dewani claimed he and his wife Anni were kidnapped at gunpoint as they drove through Gugulethu in Cape Town in the taxi in November 2010.

The couple had been on honeymoon in the country. He was released unharmed, but his wife's body was found in the abandoned car the next day. She had been shot dead.
