A man seen running across a highway in Pietermaritzburg to pick up a fallen hat died after being hit by a car on Saturday, paramedics in KwaZulu-Natal said.

The man, in his 20s, was found on the N3, near an offramp, at around 9.30am, ER24 spokeswoman Luyanda Majija said.

He had sustained multiple fractures.

The occupants in the car told paramedics, the man's hat had fallen off while he was running across the highway.

After reaching the other side of the highway, he realised his hat had fallen and went back to fetch it, when he was hit.
