Eight people have died and eight others were injured in a building accident at Meyersdal, in Johannesburg South.

Ekurhuleni emergency management services this afternoon deployed heavy machines in a bid to find workers trapped when a house collapsed.

“Of those eight injured, two are critical, five are serious and one has minor injuries," said the spokesman of the Ekurhuleni EMS William Ntladi.

The incident, he said, happened at about 10.30am at the Meyersdal Eco Estate, when the double storey house which was undergoing renovations collapsed.

Emergency personnel are not sure how many workers are on site, although one contractor said there were usually about 25 labourers.

Search teams were looking for the injured.

“At the moment there is no sign of anyone alive,” said Ntladi.
