Bongiwe Pityi has been appointed general manager of OR Tambo International Airport, the Airports Company SA (Acsa) said on Monday.

"I have no doubt about the challenging task ahead, and am equally confident that during my two-year stint in Brazil I learnt lessons that will enhance my ability to add value," Pityi said in a statement.

Pityi is the first woman to be appointed in the position.

She is an attorney of the High Court in SA and has 14 years experience in the aviation industry, locally and abroad.

Her previous position was deputy director of operational readiness planning at Guarulhos International Airport, in São Paulo, Brazil. Acsa has a stake in the airport.
