A truck transporting 35,000 litres of petrol was hijacked in Johannesburg in the early hours of Tuesday morning -- and found empty in Protea Glen a few hours later, Soweto police said.

Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said the truck was hijacked around 2am.

"The truck driver said he was hijacked by four men on his way from Alrode to Sebokeng.

"They forced him to stop when he was on the freeway and they [the hijackers] dropped him off in Brakpan," said Makhubela.

The truck was en route to Sebokeng, near Vanderbijlpark, to deliver the 35,000 litres of petrol.

"The value of the petrol is estimated to be more than R400,000," said Makhubela.

"The truck was recovered in Protea Glen empty."

"We are appealing to anyone who might have seen what happened to the petrol to come forward with information," he added.
