Hot weather conditions have sparked fires at the Kruger National Park, the game reserve said on Thursday.

Spokesman William Mabasa said the fires started on Friday.

"A run-away fire jumped over the border on Friday from Mozambique into the KNP; burning areas south of Olifants River, Houtboschrand, N'wanetsi until Tshokwane; however it is now under control," Mabasa said in a statement.

"[On Wednesday] around lunchtime, another fire came from one of our concession areas on the western side of the park. Two fires started today around Phabeni Gate areas as well and are still raging."

Mabasa said they were concerned as the hot weather made it difficult to control the blaze.

"Our conservation staff members are working day and night to try and manage all the fires at the moment," he said.

He called for people visiting the park to be cautious of the fires and refrain from starting flames.
