Residents of Eastern Cape helped themselves to a serving of braai meat after a municipal truck driver crashed into seven cows.

The Daily Sun reports that a municipal truck driver, alleged to have been drunk, knocked down five cows on Rocklands Road in Uitenhage, which were killed on impact.

Another two had to be shot because they were too injured to survive.

Residents from as far as Blikkiesdorp and Kwalanga townships streamed in to cash in on free meat available after herdsmen standing there denied that the animals belonged to them.

The slaughtering of the cows only stopped when two cops from the stock theft unit arrived after two hours.

Police spokesman Basil Seekoei confirmed the incident to the Daily Sun, saying: “The cows’ owner may lay a charge of theft when it’s found cows were slaughtered without consent.”
