Reader Ashleigh Uys shared these amazing photos of the sandstorm

"We have driven in this sand storm since just after Vryburg, we are now in Potchefstroom and we are still driving in it," Uys said.

"It is amazing."

The sandstorm also stopped a cricket match in Potch, as we learnt from a twitpic posted by @Awesomology101.

Earlier, ER24 said on its Facebook page that it had received numerous reports of a massive dust storm over great parts of Bloemfontein in the Free State.

They have also received reports of very strong winds in the Kimberley area.

Warning about the conditions, the University of Free State urged its community to remain indoors if possible.

Numerous reports on Twitter also warned drivers of the hazardous conditions.

  • By contrast, Snow Report SA is forecasting light snow for tonight in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, encompassing the Hogsback mountain region moving on into Tiffindell, Barkly East and Rhodes, as well as further into Lesotho.

"The snowfall should continue in Lesotho throughout Friday morning with more substantial snow expected at Sani Pass and surrounding mountainous regions," the website predicts.
