A well-known Durban businessman was shot dead as he sat in his car yesterday.

Police confirmed that Garth Pratten was killed by an unidentified gunman, who walked up to his car outside a meat-packing facility on Khuzimpi Shezi Road, and shot the 43-year-old in the cheek.

"He died instantly. No arrests have been made as yet," Major Thulani Zwane said.

According to Federated Meat's website, Pratten was a shareholder in the frozen meat and poultry trading company.

The company is in part of a group of entities including Ayoba Cold Storage and Jwayelani Retail.

The Ocean2air Kitesurf Centre organised a downwind in Umdloti to pay tribute to Pratten, who was a kite surfer.

"Yesterday we lost one of our friends, Garth Pratten. Words are unable to describe this man! He was a true gentleman that put his family first. He lived for his children and his wife Hayley. He loved his sports and he charged. Rest in peace my brother. You will always be with us and your memory never lost," the centre said on its Facebook page.
