Ithuba Holdings has been awarded the third licence to operate the National Lottery, the company said on Thursday.

"Ithuba comprises the kind of business acumen we believe the National Lottery needs as it enters this new phase," chairman Seth Phalatse said in a statement.

"We are pleased that our compelling bid, the credentials of the companies and individuals involved and our clear commitment to South Africa and its development have inspired confidence in Ithuba as the preferred operator".

The consortium, which brought together several of the country's respected business minds, would also uphold the lottery's mandate of raising money for a good cause, said Phalatse.

"The SA National Lottery has, since inception, improved the quality of life for many South Africans through donations to charities and other non-profit organisations."

"We look forward to taking up the operation of this engine for good causes, entertainment and for the lucky few, a life-changing experience."

The company would partner with international gaming technology company GTECH, to provide the technical support to the gaming machines.

The operation of the Third National Lottery Licence was expected to begin in June 2015.
