Ten men have been arrested in Braamfontein for illegal possession of firearms, Gauteng police said on Thursday.
Police patrolling the area approached a Toyota Quantum and searched its occupants.
"Police discovered 14 firearms after the search. The suspects did not have firearm permits with them when they were arrested. They were charged with illegal possession of 14 firearms," provincial commissioner Lt-Gen Lesetja Mothiba said.
The firearms were taken for forensic tests.
"This will help us determine whether any of the firearms have been used either in taxi violence or mall robberies."
The men are from Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and aged between 25 and 48.
They would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.
In another case, Mothiba said police arrested seven men over the weekend in Muldersdrift.
"During the arrest, we recovered three firearms and stolen goods such as TVs and cellular phones, at their houses."
"The suspects have been linked to a house robbery syndicate in the Muldersdrift and Honeydew area."
He said six of them had been linked to 22 armed robberies.
