A ten year old boy has drowned after he and four friends went swimming in a salt lake at the Govan Mbeki township in Port Elizabeth, police said on Sunday.

Five children went swimming at a salt lake in Missionvale on Saturday. Their parents were not aware, Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said.

When only four of the children returned, the police were alerted of the missing boy and a search began.

"Police divers were called and fortunately the body came up from under the water and it was taken out."

Gwavu urged parents to be more vigilant of their children's whereabouts and warned against swimming in salt lakes, as they were not meant for swimming.
