A man is due to appear in the Bolobedu Magistrate's Court on Monday in connection with the rapes of five elderly women, Limpopo police said on Saturday.

The man, 28, was arrested on Friday after being linked to the rapes, which happened between 2009 and 2013, Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said.

Five women, aged between 53 and 75, had been attacked and raped while tending to mielie fields in villages surrounding Bolobedu.

The women's description of the rapist and similarities in the modus operandi, as well as forensic evidence, led the police to believe that the attacks were carried out by the same person.

Ngoepe said Limpopo police welcomed the 20-year sentence meted out to another man, aged 20, in the Tzaneen Regional Court on Friday.

The man had been convicted of raping an 11-year-old girl in Gasekgopo village, outside Tzaneen, in November 2013.

"We hope this kind of sentence will serve as a deterrent," Ngoepe said.
