The Gauteng education department has filed an interdict against parents of Roodepoort Primary School who are demanding a coloured principal and teachers.

According to a statement released by the department today, some parents have been protesting, threatening and refusing the principal and teachers entrance to the school after raising their unhappiness with the appointment of a black principal.

This comes after the parents started protesting three months ago, and recently intimidating black teachers, telling them that their "safety at the school was not guaranteed".

The department, which is now monitoring the situation, said the group of parents previously lodged complaints against the principal, which were investigated and later found to be false.

The interdict will prevent the parents from "pertaining any acts which are violent and disruptive in nature" against departmental staff.

MEC Panyaza Lesufi condemned the behaviour, calling the behaviour "unnecessary", adding that it had a negative impact on pupils because they were losing valuable classroom time.

Said Lesufi: "We will not tolerate racism in any of our schools in Gauteng".
