The mutilated body of an eight-year-old boy has been found dumped behind a mosque near the Itireleng informal settlement in Laudium, south of Pretoria, police said.

The body was found on Wednesday night after the boy's family reported him missing on Tuesday, said Constable Tumisang Moloto.

"The woman who reported her child missing was called to the scene and she identified the body as her missing child," said Moloto.

A 39-year-old man was later arrested and charged with the child's murder.

"He was taken in for questioning," said Moloto.

The man was expected to appear in the Atteridgeville Magistrate's Court soon.
