One woman was killed and six others injured when a bakkie overturned on the R61 near Seaslopes in Margate, KwaZulu-Natal, on Sunday afternoon, paramedics said.

"Netcare 911 paramedics arrived at the scene and found that the passengers were ejected from the vehicle as the canopy tore away from the bakkie," Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said.

"After the injured were triaged paramedics found that one person sustained critical injuries, three were seriously injured while three miraculously escaped with minor injuries."

After paramedics treated the injured they transported them to a hospital in Port Shepstone for further treatment.

"Tragically an elderly female died [on the way] to hospital due to the extensive injuries that she sustained," Botha said.

"...A report from the scene indicates that the vehicle was travelling on the R61 when it veered off the road and overturned rolling down the Masinenge embankment."

The accident happened around 4pm.
