Police are investigating a case of murder after the body of a man with his hands bound was found in the boot of a burnt car in Florida Park, Johannesburg police said.

"Police went to the scene and on their arrival the car was burning. After the fire stopped, they found an adult male in the boot with his hands tied at the back," spokesman Major Mack Mngomezulu said.

"Police are investigating murder; currently we don't know the motive for the killing. The cause of death will also be investigated. The body was burnt beyond recognition."

He said at around 4am police received a complaint that a car was on fire in Church Street in the Roodepoort suburb.

Police found that the car belonged to a chemical company in Randburg but were not sure if it had been stolen.

"It is unclear if the man is employed at the company. His identity will be determined through investigations," said Mngomezulu.

Johannesburg emergency services said earlier that the body was discovered after the fire was extinguished.

At the time spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said the body was not "really burnt badly" and could be recognised.

"There was no one else around the vehicle when we arrived on the scene," he said.

The cause of the fire was unknown and would also be investigated.
