A Somalian national was arrested in Soweto on Thursday for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, Johannesburg police said.

The man was arrested in his shop around 4pm in Zone 11, Meadowlands, said Constable Sibusiso Chauke.

"Police acted swiftly following a tip-off by community members for the suspect possessing a firearm without a licence. Police went to his shop and conducted a search."

A 9mm Norinco was found in his possession. The firearm was loaded with seven rounds. Four rounds belonging to another firearm were also found.

"He was asked to produce a licence to possess a firearm and failed to produce. He was arrested and detained in the Meadowlands police cells."

An investigation was underway and the suspect would appear in the Orlando court soon, said Chauke.
