Cancer claims life of former NPA deputy head

Former National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) deputy head Jan Henning SC died of cancer on Saturday, according to a report.

Beeld newspaper reported on Monday that Henning, 63, died surrounded by family at the Flora Hospital in Roodepoort, Johannesburg, after a year-long struggle against lung and brain cancer.

His son Jan Henning said: "He was a phenomenal man in all aspects of his life."

Former NPA head Bulelani Ngcuka said Henning's death was a huge loss, especially for South Africa.

"I am very sad. Jan was one of our best. He was a brilliant prosecutor who always fought for the triumph of justice for ordinary people."

Another former NPA head Vusi Pikoli said Henning was a dedicated prosecutor with a beautiful sense of humour.

Former NPA deputy head Jan D'Oliviera said the creation of the post of head prosecutor at regional level was Henning's initiative.

Through that he provided guidance to all prosecutors at ground level and advanced effectiveness and productivity.

Another former prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach said Henning was an outstanding prosecutor who often spoke of how disappointed his mother was that he was never appointed as a magistrate.

"He worked tirelessly to improve the working conditions of prosecutors."

Henning retired for health reasons in 2007.

Funeral arrangements had not yet been finalised.
