A woman was arrested for allegedly murdering her one-year-old baby girl in Dutywa, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

"It is alleged that community members saw the floating body of the child on Monday, at 10am in a dam at Sheshegu Location, Ngxakaxha Village," said Captain Jackson Manatha.

He said a suitcase containing clothes and a photograph of the child was found at the scene.

Investigations led detectives to a 21-year-old woman. She was arrested at her home at Doti on Wednesday.

"The suspect has admitted to the police that she threw the child at the dam on Monday at about 6am."

It was not yet clear why she allegedly threw her child into the dam.

"She has been charged with murder and will appear before the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Friday."
