A locomotive operator died in an underground vehicle accident at the Mponeng mine in the Carletonville area, AngloGold Ashanti Limited said on Monday.

"AngloGold Ashanti regrets to announce the death of an employee at Mponeng Mine in the Carletonville area," it said in a statement.

"The deceased, a locomotive operator, was fatally injured in a underground vehicle incident on Thursday afternoon."

AngloGold Ashanti Limited said the mineral resources department was notified and an in loco inspection was conducted.

The mine said that tramming activities at the section where the incident occurred had been suspended.

"AngloGold Ashanti would like to express its sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased."

The mine was working with the employee's family to assist them through this difficult time, it said.
