A suspected armed robber was run over by a police van as he tried to flee a Fruit and Veg City outlet in Balfour Park in Vincent‚ East London‚ on Friday. The incident occurred in the car park outside the Fruit and Veg City in Balfour. Cambridge Police spokesman Captain Mluleki Mbi said the van did not drive over the man deliberately.Mbi said the man and his two accomplices were spotted sitting in a white luxury car‚ which later turned out to have false number plates‚ by shopping centre security guards. The car and the men aroused their suspicions‚ and they alerted the police. Mbi said members of the Cambridge Task Team responded."They found three males sitting in the car and on questioning them‚ one man drew a firearm‚ got out of the car and began fleeing‚” Mbi said. The police gave chase and an officer driving a marked police patrol van joined the chase.“The suspect ran to the back of the shopping centre and when he was cornered he aimed his firearm at the officers‚” said Mbi.He said the officer in the van then ran over the man. But it was not deliberate. The man was rushed to Frere Hospital where he was treated for a broken leg.The three men‚ aged between 32 and 38 years‚ are in custody facing charges of pointing of a firearm‚ possession of unlicensed firearms and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle. They are expected to appear in the East London Magistrate’s Court soon. – RDM News Wire, Daily Dispatch..
