ER24 concerned about pedestrian accidents

ER24 raised concern about the amount of accidents involving pedestrians‚ saying it had already attended to over 1200 incidents since the beginning of the year. “Sadly‚ most transport-related incidents involving pedestrians result in critical or fatal injuries‚” a statement from the paramedic service said.ER24‚ taking statistics gathered from 2013 up until 2015‚ found “that it attends to an average of 10 pedestrian-related incidents a day”.The service quoted Dr Marilyn Hoggan‚ a registrar from the Forensic Pathology Services in Johannesburg‚ as saying there are many cases where the patient initially survives the accident‚ then dies later due to complications related to the initial incident.“For example‚ a patient who sustains a head injury due to a pedestrian vehicle accident‚ who is comatose and ventilated‚ may develop pneumonia while recovering from the head injury and succumb to the pneumonia‚” she said.“While a number of people have no other option but to walk‚ either to work or school for example‚ pedestrians should do everything possible to be safer while walking.” ER24 said...
