Three suspects who are said to have been involved in the murder of deceased Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa have been identified by police.

Arrests are imminent for the three 'alleged hitmen' who are believed to have gunned down Meyiwa in Vooslorus late last year.

The Citizen reports that police are on "the verge of making a breakthrough" in the case, according to a source with knowledge of the investigation. The police have identified the suspects and are closing in on the men.

National police spokesperson Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale said the investigation was progressing very well. He would not be drawn into details of the case. Meanwhile, Senzo's father, Sam Meyiwa told the Sunday Tribune he was aware of the manhunt police had launched to find the suspects.

"I do not want to tip them off by giving more details, but police are in hot pursuit," said Sam.

Meyiwa was killed at his girlfriend, Kelly Khumalo's home. Since his death, one suspect was arrested - Zamokuhle Mbatha who was later released from police custody after no evidence could be found of his involvement in the murder. Mbatha has now brought charges worth R10 million against the police. He is suing for wrongful arrest and defamation.
