Mandla Mandela escapes jail time for assault

The grandson of former president Nelson Mandela‚ Mandla Mandela‚ has been sentenced with a fine of R10‚000 or three years in jail‚ all suspended‚ for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Mandela and his team of lawyers have indicated that they will appeal both the conviction and sentence‚ the Dispatch newspaper reported on its Twitter feed.The ANC MP and head of the Mandela royal house was found guilty in the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court of assaulting motorist Mlamli Ngudle in October 2013.The court heard that he slapped‚ kicked and stomped on Ngudle‚ a teacher.Ngudle was driving an Isuzi bakkie when he bumped the BMW X5 belonging to an investor who was having lunch with Mandla in the Mthatha CBD.The accident happened when Ngudle tried to reverse out of a driveway.The National Prosecuting Authority had called for Mandela to serve time in prison saying it would send a strong message to the public that no one is above the law. ..
