An image of a woman cradling a bottle of liquor while seated in the driver's seat of an Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department went viral on social media - leading to an investigation by the police.

Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD police spokesperson said an investigation is underway to determine who the woman is and why she was allowed to pose in a police car.

Three images went viral on social media, showing a woman seated in the car and appearing to sip on two different bottles of alcohol.

Kgasago said a preliminary inquiry had revealed that the woman did not work for the EMPD and it was unclear as to how she had access to the state vehicle.

"The matter is with the integrity and standard unit, they will investigate and find out whose name the car was issued in. That person will have to explain the incident and disciplinary action will follow," said Kgasago.
