SAPS HR head has ‘total faith and confidence’ in Phiyega

Sunday newspaper reports about an “apparent ‘rebellion’ at senior management level” of the South African Police Service (SAPS) prompted its human resources boss to issue a statement listing its national commissioner’s achievements. Lieutenant-General Lineo Ntshiea‚ the divisional commissioner: human resource management‚ was at pains to “categorically distance” herself from “media reports (that) are clearly malicious and aimed at destabilising the SAPS and confusing our members”.“The reports‚” she claimed‚ “are baseless and possibly emanated from a few disgruntled individuals who are resisting the good changes introduced by…General Riah Phiyega.”Chief among these‚ Ntshiea ventured‚ was that “five separate divisions and components dealing with different aspects of human resources…have been streamlined into two divisions namely human resource management and human resource development”.“The benefit of this is that we are no longer operating in silos and there is better synergy between head office and the provincial offices.”According to Ntshiea‚ achievements under the “sterling leadership of General Phiyega” included:A community-based recruitment strategy for new police officers that “was introduced to strengthen the process and include community involvement‚ eliminate corruption through the segregation of duties and professionalise the SAPS”;The “establishment of an HR committee and other related sub-committees to add value to HR practices;Approving the establishment of an Integrity Unit;Establishing a police university “to further educate‚ empower our police men and women with a view of professionalising the police”;The introduction of the National SAPS Excellence Awards to recognise and reward good performance; andThe acceleration of the “appointment of female divisional dommissioners which goes a long in achieving the 50/50% target set by government”.“I have total faith and confidence that‚ under the leadership of General Phiyega‚ the SAPS is in a position to deliver on its core constitutional mandate of ensuring that all citizens are and feel safe‚ a sentiment I am sure is shared by most of my colleagues and SAPS personnel‚ contrary to media reports‚” said Ntshiea...
