In her bid to stay on as national police commissioner, Riah Phiyega is said to have begged president Jacob Zuma to retain her position as the country's top cop.

Phiyega's submission as to why she should remain as the national police commissioner includes the fact that she was only two months into her job when the Marikana incident occurred.

According to The Sunday Independent, police sources who have seen Phiyega's response say she argues that it would be "unfair for her to be singled out and blamed for the killing of mineworkers as the decision to intervene was a collective one."

The Independent claims Phiyega has rallied support of all nine provincial police commissioners by urging them to submit a statement supporting her. The statement was apparently drafted by national police spokesperson, Solomon Makgale. Three provincial police offices, Gauteng, North West and Mpumalanga provided separate statements backing Phiyega.

According to the Presidency, Zuma will study Phiyega's response and determine if any intervention is warranted.
