A ceiling collapsed at the East Rand Mall in Boksburg today‚ during renovations. This is the latest incident potentially affecting the safety of shoppers recently‚ after structural collapses at Sandton City in June.

“Roof structure collapsed at East Rand Mall earlier. Luckily no injuries‚” PigSpotter Cliff @PigSpotter tweeted‚ along with a photo of the damage at pic.twitter.com/7Wg8RgUFQR. The affected area was near the Woolworths store.

The centre is undergoing extensive redevelopment plans‚ which will see the Mall enlarged by 7‚350 m² with rooftop parking‚ new tiling and lighting‚ upgraded bathroom facilities and additional stores. The first phase of the extension and refurbishment began in January 2015‚ and is expected be completed in the last quarter of 2016.

At Sandton City last month‚ a woman shopper was injured when part of the ceiling between the centre and Nelson Mandela Square collapsed. In another incident the same month‚ EWN reported that two construction workers were hurt in what was described as a “structural collapse”.

Also in June‚ Nelson Mandela Square management confirmed that a shopper fell over a section of carpeting that was in place as part of the centre’s refurbishment process.

Emergency services were called to treat her and she was transported to hospital. The centre said while they were investigating the incidents and were concerned with shoppers’ safety‚ “All areas under refurbishment are well demarcated and sign posted”.
