Globally renowned musician Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse handed himself to the police on Tuesday after he admitted to holding two young men and beating them for up to six hours, allegedly with a hammer and a gun, for stealing a battery at his Soweto home.

Police spokesman Kay Makhubele confirmed on Wednesday that a case of assault with grievous bodily harm had been opened against Mabuse at Kliptown police station.

The 65-year-old musician will appear in court in connection with assault and kidnapping, the Daily Sun reported.

Anthony Mamoepa (25), and his friend, Thando Mbonambi (17) did not deny stealing the battery, according to the report.

Mbonambi told the paper that while they were looking for a buyer for the battery, his friend Mamoepa ran away when Hotstix arrived in a VW Polo.

Upon arrival, Mbonambi said he was thrown into the boot of the car and taken to Mabuse’s house, where he alleges the musician “beat me with a hammer in the chest while his neighbour was hitting me on the head with a gun.”

According to the report, Mabuse admitted Mbonambi was put in the boot but denied using a hammer or a gun to assault them.
