Survey shows sexism still rife in SA

Women and men in South Africa believe the woman’s place is in the home and that a boy has more right to education that a girl. This startling finding‚ by market research company Ipsos‚ comes ahead of Women’s Day on August 9.Both genders believe women should be kept “in their place” and‚ when jobs are scarce‚ men have more rights to a job than women‚ according to the survey released on Friday.Fewer women than men believe that it’s easier for men to find work during hard times. But‚ judging from employment statistics‚ South African employers seem “to give preference to men‚ as a considerably higher proportion of women (39%) than men (27%) are unemployed”‚ Ipsos found.On the political front‚ a third of adults believe that men make better leaders than women.And 44% think the government is doing a fair to good job of dealing with violence against women and children. On promoting gender equality and women’s rights‚ about 57% of respondents feel the government is doing well - but men are “are slightly more complimentary about the government’s efforts than women”.A total of 3564 face-to-face interviews were conducted with randomly selected adults‚ Ipsos said...
